ENGINEER'S REPORT.

Tho engineer's report as published yesterday was submitted. Mr. Kendall also laid before tho Council a supplementary report dealing with the following matters: — Waterworks: Mr. Hooker states that he has carried out the usual duties at Mangoroi and in addition has scraped and painted a portion of the filters. "He (the engineer) sent men out to assist with the cleaning of the reservoir, which was emptied and was found to be in a much better condition than was anticipated. . Sewers: The sewer for the drainage of that portion of the north side of €tevon Street, which lies to the east of Gover Street is well mrikr way, and when finished will have a fall that is better than most sewers in town except in those street* having a naturally steep gradient. This work entailed the tricing up of the sewer in Cover Street and-plac-ing the new sewer at the new level. • Building Permits: Messrs. Sanderson and Griffiths apply for a permit to erect a temporary printing room in < Curme Street, a plan of which was sub- i mitted. Councillor Browne congratulated tfc« .Council and the engineer on the cheap "cost of the by-pass and also the work that had been done at Mill Road. ' Sanction was given for tho erection of temporary printing room for the Taranaki Herald in accordance with a plan. Permission was also given to Mr. 1 W. Perry to extend his present workr °The Mayor took the opportunity of congratulating the engineer on the success of his work in draining the hoLow between V^evon and Gill Streets end Gover and Eliot Streets. In face of criticism levelled at the work by people who thought they knew or claimed to know, the result was very satisfactory. Councillor Unwrno said he had heard ,the rumour that the side drive was unsafe and that it was leaking as badly, as ever. He asked whether that had come -within the scope of the engineer's recent inspection. 1 The engineer said he had heard the rumour himself. He had inspected the ! work and found it just as he expected ; to find it— just as safe and as good as the day on which he completed it. \ This explanation was considered very satisfactory.

ABATTOIRS. The annual report and also the usual monthly report of the abattoir manager, Mr T. J. Reakes, were approved.

WORKS COMMITTEE.

The Work 3 Committee recommended that the agreement with the Railway Department for the purchase of the old railway line for the extension of Liardet Street be approved and that the same be sealed and signed; that two street lights be erected in Money Street from Barrett Street to Vivian Street; that the Fire Board be informed that pending further instructions from the Council their authority to use the borough water mains i* limited to the- area within the borough boundaries; that the borough engineer be authorised to afwraige ior ' the motor at the abattoir to be transferred to the metal crashing depot pending a newmotor being purchased tor stone crushing. The report was approved.
