DANNEVIRKE, Sept. 10. To-day a young man named William Richter, a recent arrival from Germany, was before the Court charged with theft of jewellery, breaking and entering, and theft of a bicycle. On July 4 Tie^tole a bike at Masterton, rode through to Dannevirke, and threw the machine in a stream. He visited the residence of ' W. F. .Knight on July 9th, asked for and was supplied with food. On 1 leaving he saw a window open, and went in and stole a jewel oase, the. propeMy df Mrs. .Williams. He went on to Napier, and on returning on August 5 entered the house, but was discovered and decamped without anything. The robbery waar' a mystery, but Richter was subsequently arrested in Wellington for theft of the bicycle, and then the jewel case and 'a ring, identified as that of Mrs. Williams, was .found in 'the lining of his Coat. He stated he had thrown the i other jewellery in a river near Napier. He pleaded guilty and was committed for sentence. For theft of the bike at Masterton he received three months' ' imprisonment. Richter was also committed for sentence at Woodville on Wednesday for theft at Papatawa.
