SATURDAY CRICKET.

SUGGESTIONS FROM THE

COUNTRY.

(To the Eidtor.)

Sir, — Having ?)een an enthusiastic cricketer for several years- I—in1 — in fact, since the Egmont Village Club was formed — I would like to point out a few rules, which would enable the country teams — without any great inconvenience to the town teams — to participate in the matches on Saturday afternoons! First, to commence play in New Plymouth at 1.30 or 1.45, and draw stumps at 4.30. This would give the country players time to get home and help with the evening's milking, .which is at its height just then. Three hours is generally long enough for an innings each. At present,, of course, we play only for the honour of winning, but if the townspeople could see their way to meet us early after dinner (on our ground an hour later would do) I'm sure several country teams would be in the field in real earnest, and cricket would go ahead by leaps and bounds, as also would the general interest in it, and that is what we need. At the end of the cup matches, a good idea would bo to select a team from Thursday players, to try conclusions with the Saturday players, the team to include one at least of every club playing in the cup fixtures. Another favour would be to allow the country teams the use of a grass wicket occasionally. I think if the town teams can manage to meet us, as I have stated, the country clubs will be able to get better teams together, and Saturday cricket will go ' ahead as £ sincerely hope cricket altogether all over Taranaki will. — I am, etc., CRICKETER. Egmont Village, Sept. 9.
