WHERE VON TEMPSKY FELL.
BATTLE OF TE XCiLTU O TK MANU. FORTIETH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATED. Per Press Association. JJAWERA, Sept. 7. There was a groat gathering at To Ngutf o te Mann yosterday in commemoration of the disastrous engagement that took place forty years sifjo to-day, when Von Tempsky's for^e w as ;.n disastrously defeated and tho gallant Major fell. Of the force which took part in the engagement, seven survivors wero prosent yesterday. These were J. Livingston, J. Flynn (Hawera), J. H. Walker (Waitara), J. Hickman (Urenui), J. O'D. Quigley (Inglewood), J. J. Griffiths and T. P. Lister (New Plymouth). The Hon. R. McNab (Minister of Defence) was personally introduced to, and examined the medals worn by, tho veterans. In addressing the assemblage, Mr McNab said many such gatherings would simplify the defence problem, for a sentiment would be. built up, around which a rallying point would bo formed. Ho said wo wero living in a fool's paradise, and it must not bo thought that, because now do enemies wore within our borders,, the defence problem was solved. "With the ad\ r anee of civilisation Powers wore now able- to striko from groat distances. Mr C. E. Major, M.P., and others also spoke. Many tributes wore paid to Von Totnpsky's memory. Volunteer rorpn and bands from nil parts of tho district took part in the celebrations.
