A REPLY.
The local gaoler, .Mr Millington, told ' a Herald representative to-day how tho order for McNeil's release had boon obtained. The prisoner petitioned thw Governor for some respite from his harsh confinement. The petition was referred to Judge* Cooper, who visited the- gaol and inquired into "the case. Then the matter was referred to the Consultative Committee, consisting of fhe -local Magistrate and tho Visiting Justices. This committee sent to the Governor a recommendation, and, in accordance with this, McNeil was released on probation for two years. Tho duty then fell on Mr Millington of finding work for the man, and iie got him the billot on the 801 l Block farm. Tho prison authorities had no power to arrost McNeil after his escape until ono month should have expired, for he wa. J only required to report himself once n month. The month would liavo expired next Friday, but in tho meanwhile a warrant has boon issued for the man's arrest on other charges.
