OLYMPIA SKATING RINK.

It must be a gratification to the management of the Olyntyia Skating Rink to notice the increasing interest being taken in roller skating. This, they attribute to the strict supervision exorcised for the patrons' comfort and the, freedom > of the rink from any unseemly behaviour. The floor on Saturday night was crowded with experts and beginners. During a conversation as to the increasing interest displayed in rmking, the proprietor said he attributed it to tho facth tat in small towns like New Plymouth the public would hang back to see for themselves who patronised the place, but on finding that the rink was run on lines of resp%6lat>ility and ' kept select, the public- would invariably appreciate this and recommend riflfcing tOjthei^ friends. , . Dlmiig^ Saturday evening hockey was indulged in. Amongst 'the players were two who could not keep on their, |eet w.b,Ue- chasing the ball, and , their * gyrations' causefl much ' merfi'ment. k Tho prizes won at the carnival were presented to the successful competitors as follows: — Best female impersona^ tion by a .gentleman l Mr Chong received three- votes more than Mr Willis, who, we consider, gave the begt impersonation. Maori chief : Mr Hill. Maori Wahine; Miss Hill. Gentlemen's original costume: Mr Lints, as East and West End of London. Ladieß* fancy costume: Miss Free. Gentlemen's fancy costume: Mr Cock. Mr Fox. winner of the cigarette race: Mr Willis; winner of the mile handicap; Miss Hill, winner of the pair race, •also received crises. To-morrow night an interesting raoe between two local blacksmiths (their weight totalling thirty-four stone, and who neither of them have previously had skates on) takes place aiP9 o'clock. This is to decide a wager between themselves. A ladies' hockey match takes place on Wednesday night.
