A\ AMICABLE CONFERENCE
Per Press Association.
THAMES, April li
A conference of representatives of mining companies operating in the Thames, Karangahakc, and Coroinandel districts, and the Thames Miners' Union, which possesses a largo number of workers in each district, was held to-day. The business was to discuss conditions of work and fix the rate of pay for miners and others. The union asked for an increase of pay for miners, blacksmiths, and winding engineers. The proceedings were of a most amicable nature, a true spirit of conciliation being shown on both sides. It was unanimously decided to grant increases in as Under: — Miners from 8s to 8s 6d a day; blacksmiths to 9s Od, and w inding engineers 9s to 10s. These are practically tho same rates as those prevailing in other portions of the geldiields where men are working under an award of tho Arbitration Court. The opinion was expressed that, on ing to the presence of minerals in the w ater and the general conditions underground, the increase to the men was in every way justified.
