THEFT OF A PICTURE.

VALUED JUS £600. Per Press Association. *r * WELLINGTON, April 13. The local -Art Gallery was burgled between 5.80 p.m. on Saturday and 2.80 yesterday afternoon. A famous landscape painting by R. W. Leader^ R.A., was stolen. The painting, which represented an English -landscape <"View from Surrey Hills") was on canvas about 4ft. by sft. It was safe when tho Gallery was closed on Saturday. Yesterday the frame was discovered in an ante-room. A dark lantern, a jemmy and other burglarious tools Fere lying around 1 . The picture was brought, to New Zealand by Mr A. Longderi with other English works of aft for the New Zealand Exhibition and waa subsequentlypurchased by Mr W. B. Rhodes, of Wellington, for. about 4 £600 and pregentecl to the local Gallery.
