FIRE. IN WELLINGTON.

A fire broke out this evening in the Puketapu .Sawmill Company's premises, situated between Victoria Street and Courtenay- Placet -Aystiffish northeasterly wind was blowing at the time, which quickly fanned the flames and caused^ the, fire to spread, diagonally aeeoss towards Courtenay Place, and the inflammable j naateyiftl- in the timber yard, was quickly consumed*, 3?hen the fire swept into Courtenay Place and gutted a two-story brick building, owned, by T. Young, containing on the ground floor three shops.," One of these was occupiecTby Kirkpairick, a grocer, one by Tester, a hairdresser and tobaoconist, and the other was empty. .An empty- wooden shop adjoining, also owned by T. Young, was destroyed, as also were the premises occupied by Mrs Levy (a second hand goods dealer) and a confectioner: The top floor of Young's building was occupied by Nicholl, Stringer and Co., painters. No estimate, of the damage can be made at presfent,' but 5t must prove to be considerable, perhaps about £5000. . Yofing's' brick building was insured for £2800 in the Phoenix office, and two-thirds of this amount was re-insur-ed. A r^isk of £250 was held by the Phoenix office on the Puketapu sawmill building, half being reJnsnred- The' Phdenix^office had also a policy of J&25 on tooHKn the mill. The main insurance of the contents was with the <■ Royal Exchange Co., which had a policy for £1500* upon the contents of the mill and £500 upon the timber. Tester was insured for £200. He estimates his loss at £150 more. Nicholl; Stringer and Co.'s stock of paints; was insured 4 for £600 in the New Zealand Company's office. " ■ • TftE' INSURANCES. V „ .WELLINGTON/March 31. <- The insujances on the. Puketapu Timber Company's mill were £500 in the Phoenix on plant and fittings, £750 in the Royal and £1150 in* the Atlas. The building occupied by Kane, confectioner, and Levy, second-hand dealer, and owned by! Richards and Wilson, was insured for, £250 in the Sun office. N4choll, Stringer, and Roberts, decorators, who had vacated the premises but left a portion of their stock in the building were covered by a policy of £1400 in the South British.
