NOTES.
| (By Field Glass.) "New York fa in a titter over a recent experience .of Hadkensphmidt's- (says tie Referee's Frisco correspondent). It sbpeart that Tom CBourke, George ifixon's old manager, took a big fat m;an named Rogers to London and tibomed him as the champion wrestler qf America. Rogers and Hack, were nugtehed after nraeh;Bres» twork,- and oj 'course Hack. won. They say in Kfew York that Rogers knows as much about wrestling as a cow knows about tfie Kocan. Henoe the merriment. The ex-mnateur distance champion, Shrub, has completed his tour of a big portion of the globe and returned to England. The little man was not once beaten — a great record. The Olympic Games committee has passed a rule to debar anyone # representing a country of which he is not a bona fide citizen born or, completely naturalised. This is sure to excite American enthusiasts, as Guy Hackins the great College distance runner, i» a New EJealander. Haskins h attending a college in Pennsylvania. His college mile is a record, and he has won the fire miles cross country and the half mile championships. It is not very long since Haskins met a curious experience at the hands of a famous thousand yards runner in the States. Haskins was just about to; pa» feis famous adversary near the finish when the Yank collared him low and gave him a heavy fall. A free fight resulted. The race was awarded to the Christchurch boy. The American's excuse was that his conduct wa& tho outcome of the irritations of a beaten man. That man's no sport! Sheppard is the man, and he has since accused Hawkins of persistently haraseing him in all events in which they
met. Australasia could wad a small but high-class combination to the Olympiad Qames. There are Haskins, Barker, Button, Blak© (runners), Kerr (walker) Healy, Beaurepaire, Springfield (swimmers), Brookes and Wilding (tennis players). — and to make America smile —Bill Squires (boxor); or, if "Bill" won't do. there's Billy Murphy. Nigel Barker is cortainly one of the greatest runners in Australasia torday, but he does not seem to get a great Amount of recognition.
