A modification of the system of, awarding "free -places in secondary schools is announced by the Education Department. ■ . In future it proposes to accept, if desired, in lieu of the whole or part of the senior free places examination, recommendations, of the. principals of schools based upon work done by candidates for senior free places during their course as junior free pupils and supported by such evi~ dence as that of the pupils' laboratory or workshop notes and by any repo*t4 received from Inspectors. The method appears tb he particularly applicable to such subjects. as the branches handwork and the branches of science, such as physics and . chemistry.
