J. J. MEIKLE.

APPLICATION FOR COMPENSATION

(Per Press Association).

WELLINGTON, July 25.

In reply to a deputation from the Meikle Committee which waited on him to-day, the Premier said it was one of the fine sides of nature to see a committee working on behalf of a man who, they considered, had been wrongly sent to prison. He thought it was proper to give effect to the recommendations of tlie Commission, and the intimated that legislation was being prepared with tho object of having Meikle' s name deleted from the criminal records. The amount of compensation was a difficult one to determine, but it was being enquired into by the whole of the Ministers. He did not wish tp reflect on the Commission's report in any way, but said it contained matters which made the task of the Government in this direction a difficult one. Probably a determination would be arrived at in the course of the next fortnight^ and he would let the secretary of the committee know the result.
