(From Our Own Correspondent.) At last the mail contractor has taken to packhorses. And no wonder! The "cultivated" spots on the main road are past driving through in anything frailer than a bullock dray. There is every prospect of good roads next winter, as our representatives on the Council know by twelve years' experience what should not be done and intend to avoid the old mistake. Even the byroads' people are wanting to know about the future, and at a gathering of ratepayers from the Cliffs Road Councillor O'Sullivan promised that at least £400 would be spent on that road next season in metal. I think that instead of making the usual bog it would be better to raise a portion of this road each year and metal it. It may cost rather more than fascines, "but is more permanent and comfortable to travel over. Bushfelling work is going on steadily in the Mokio Road, and Several gangs are at work in the Tangitu Road. It is surprising how settlement is being pushed* on in spite of adverse conditions. Country that was not worth thinking of a few years ago is turning off wool and mutton. IMr Skirtrop has a party at work improving the track over the Mokio saddle, but nothing less than a dray road will satisfy the settlers.
