AWA KINO.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) A bootmaker has settled in the district and is getting as much work as ho can do. His advent supplies a longfelt want. Our village blacksmith, Mr Rickman, is kept going and talks of taking on an apprentice if the pressure continues. He is now the sole welder of iron between Urenui and Tc Kuiti. Mr Matheson has opened a bookseller's shop in connection with the billiard room. The meeting convened by Mr D Ansell to talk over rowing matters and the advisability of building a boatshe'l here was well attended. Mr F. Iredale took the chair on the banks of the Awakino and we all ranged ourselves round him and listened to his words of encouragement and advice. Finally it was decided to build the shed by ths aid of subscriptions. This is not in opposition to the Mokau Rowing Club but in conjunction with that organisation The Awakino members are to be supplied with one of the Mokau boats. Those present at the meeting subscribe 1 £3 ss. A resolution was passed at the Awakino Cricket Club's meeting to supply the members of the Mokau River Club with a net, conditionally on six members being obtained up there. Just a few more words about the dog trial. Some of the dogs showed intelligence and training of a very high order, notably Mr J. Scott's King, which gave a fine exhibition of the fine points lof trial work, showing to advantage as a quiet, steady worker. In class 2 this dog went away on a fine cast, headed well, brought back steadily, worked cleverly at the yard, kept his sheep m good control, and yarded his sheep in the good time of 9min. Mr J. McNush's Jumbp in the same event did not cast well, was too eager in the bring back, inclined to give tongue and hustle his sheep in yarding. In class 3 Mr Reg. Black's Niss worked steadily in the hunt away, slewing well, was under good command, brought back in good style but should have been steadied more. In the same class Mr J. Mackay's Guy worked steadily, but did not slew well, missing the top flag H« worked well at hand. In the fourth event Mr J. Scott's Bob worked well in the huntaway, showing plenty of bounce and slewing well under good command. Most of us own dogs up this way with more or less intelligence in working sheep. To such the trials were -a, rare treat; and even those who kneAV nothing and cared less confessed themselves extremely interested. That the next meeting of the Dog Trial Club will be on a much larger scale is beyond doubt, and there ought to be a much larger attendance.
