GSEAT DAMAGE TO WHARF WORKS. (Per I Pr«sa Association.) ' ' AUCKLAND, July 22. . The . Collector, of Customs has been notified by the'master of the s.s. Kawau that the beacon on Maori Rock, an the nortih channel at Kawau has been dislodged. The gale on Sunday caused expensive damage to portions .of the new ferroconcrete railway 'wharf. The part affected' Most" Is* fh~e"~f raining wall, the sheathed piles, of which extend : the whole length of the wharf, so asf! to turn the tide and make still water inside. About a dozen bays in the middle of the wall have been torn out' almost completely, a. few isolated piles being visible here and there, with the jagged ends of the steel reinforcement 'sticking out of the top. The heavy 'top girder has also gone in these bays, with the exception of some small portions hanging to the tops of isolated piles. The steel bars forming the reinforcement were bent and stripped of concrete across the intervening space. Furi thier out, towards the end of the wharf, „ the wall still stands, though daylight can be s'fsen glitomejing between the piles* in several? places '. . At* the place where the work is now progressing, the \ ravages of the storm are more apparent. HEAVY FLOODS. AUCKLAND, July 23. The Ohinemuri district suffered much from the gale and flood of Saturday night and Sunday. The river overflowed its banks. At 1.30 p.m. on Sunday the main street in Paeroa was like a mill race. The low-lying land was badly flooded. Many residents removed from their homes in vehicles. The water drained | off with the ebb tifle early on Monday morning.
