A SCHOONER IN TROUBLE.

MAN WASHED OVERBOARD.

Per Press Association. DUNEDIN, July 21. Tho schooner Waratah, which left Lyttelton on the 12th inst. for Dunedin, arrived to-day. She met with a succession of southerly and south-wes-terly, gales throughout, with high seas. , On Wednesday last, when thte vessel was about 60 miles off the coast, abreast of Oamaru, a big wave came over the port side, washing the cook, named Joseph Hughes, overboard. The' unfortunate man was seen lying in the water near the vessel, apparently unconscious, as he made no effort to grasp some timber thrown overboard, which floated within his reach. Tho vessel was brought round, and a search was made, but no sign of Hughes was discovered. Hughes, who was about 50 years of age, leaves a widow and family of seven in Sydney.
