DUNEDIN HARBOUR.

(Per Press Association.)

DUNEDIN, July 1&. At a special meeting of the Otago Harbour Board yesterday, the Hon. S. Fergus moved that the Otago Harbour Board should approach Parliament with, a view to getting an Enabling Bill authorising 1 the Board to borrow, when necessary, any sum not exceeding £100,000 for the. purpose of carrying out works for the permanent improvement of the harbour. ♦ -*••-, j In speaking to the motion, Mr Fergus said the dredge, though good in her day, was now unfit to cope with the work. They were also behind in appliances for working cargo in order to allow the largest vessels afloat to pass to Port Chalmers and Dunedin. These and<<inany other disabilities would have to be removed. It , was also necessary in order to relieve the strain on the finances that works which were notv charged to revenue should be charged to capital. The Board would shortly be called upon to erect a light tower at the end of the moio. and extra expenditure was* also required at Harrington Point, while further and better wharfage accommodation was required at Dunedin. The Tongue wharf would have to be re moved, and the basin enlarged. Facilities' should also be provided for the discharge of coal and timber along Anderson's Bay Road, and powerful cranes worked by electricity placed on the wharves. A second dredge for the lower harbour was also necessary.

The motion was carried ' by 7 votes to 3.
