KOHURATAHI.

(From Our Own Correspondent.)

I have to record the arrival of our new schoolmaster, Mr Rice, late of Oamaru, South \ Canterbury, who is ivery pleased with every thing, except the school residence, which is totally unfit for the purpose, being comprised of four rooms on end,/ the occupants having <to pass Ifhrou^h one room after the other to get to the last one. This makes it hardly decent for the purpose of bedrooms, etc. There is only one fireplace in the residence, and the resident will have to study — and receive his friends in the kitchen. I believe the committee are urging on the Board the necessity of building a new residence, and I hope they will be successful. There should be funds enough to do so, as the Government gave a special g?ant of £800 in the first place \o-: the WhaHgamomona School, and we a'l know that the f-chool as At pres^m built did not cost £600* T trust the committee will ascertain wherj the bal ance of the grant is, and demand that it shall be spent <>n a new residence. The annual dance was held ii Iho Kohuratahi Hall on May 12th, but, owing to the inclement \veaiV-i. experienced on that d.ie 1 . it was not the success this function usually .s. I believe the Hall Cotn-iT.t.ve- has been rearranged, and pome julditior al guarantors secured, whi.;h si oiild inspire more confkbme in the lrmnag-e-ment.

I received a "i f 'ion some little time since— th it the Go\trnmerit meant to metal tho la'l places from the school <o Ihe Kohuratt hi Hall, and had voted £100 or the purpose. Tt is already more than timo it was spent, and every week's delay only makes the work more expensive. Last winter the road was impassable, and if it had not been for Messrs Joyce and McLaughlin's ! Idn'dness in allowing people to pro through their fences and property the settlers would have been stuck. I > trust those in power will sec ihat' the vote is expended at once. -
