SIR JOSEPH WARD'S VISIT.

VARIOUS DEPUTATIONS

Sir Joseph Ward, who arrived in New Plymouth o* Tuesday night in connection with the opening of th c Hospital Consumptive Annex, was <icputationised on Wednesday morning in tho Mayor's room in reference to local requirements and projects. Pressure on oiir space to-daj- precludes us from publishing a full report, which, however, will follow in to-morrow's issue. A deputation from the Borough Council requested a loot of railway land and the right over the railway lino in connection with the proposed extension of Brougham-street into Gill-street in ordor to divert the present digested traffic in Devon-street. Sir Joseph recognised the importance of the scheme, and as a layman considered it feasible, but in case of possible engineering difficulties, asked for a full sketch and memorandum of proposals, and promised to confer with tho Chief Engineer and reply if possible by Tuesday.

I The "Hall by the Sea" project was introduced! by Mr Rpbcrts and request was made for permission to build over the foreshore near tho Terminus Hotel, this portion of tho beach being under tho control of the Department. The North Egmont Hotiso Committee asked for an appropriation towards completing two miles of unmotalled road on the North Egmont ' Road, and Sir Joseph promised to try and get Parliament to sanction a vote next session.

The Chamber of Commerce with the National Dairy Association brought forward the matter of tho adulteration of New Zealand butter by tho Dutchmen, and also the excessive charge of Is Gd per ton for carriage of butter from the Moturoa works to the breakwater. In regard to the former Sir Joseph assured the deputation that the Government would tako all the necessary steps possible to counteract tho trouble, but in respect to the other he would require to investigate the matter "thoroughly because it affected the whole principle of terminal haulage throughout the colony.
