Easter Monday.

STAR FOOTBALL CLUB'S &POETS.

The principal attraction for the public in town on Easter Monday was the annual sports fixture held by the Star Football Club. When the holiday was ushered m with rain it looked ominous for the gathering, but the weather cleared up in tho forenoon and there was every prospect of the fixture being conducted under favourable atmospheric conditions. Towards noon however,- jrist; on the hour of starting tihe programme Jupiter Pluvius again turned on tbe tap, and kept H going all the uay, the rain being &t times heavy. '! he morning train brought in a iarge number* of country settlers, the laciest that has ever come in here for shorts, and a good proportion of the3e, bi-eides a large number of townspeople prwerred to remain in town vuvJur shelter, rather than attend the *po:ts. Despite this drawback, nowever, the fixture was well patronised and the majority of those who assembled siaw the programme through to the finish. The committee and officials ui-der the circumstances got the programme through smartly, the Jast event being finished ' about 4 o'clock. The sf ort during the day was interesting; Mr E. H. Kivell's handicapping pioducing some good finishes. The judges (Messrs W. T. Jennings, K.H 1?.. C. Clarke, and E. G. Pardy) hai no difficulty in placing the compel ivois, except in the half ral-e, in wlach Morey and Barnes breasted the tape, almost on terms. The judges' decision was in favour of Morcy. Mr K. Humphries held ihe starter's gun (why not a pistol *), and dtspauhed his fields on even terms, although he was hampered in his later effoits owing to a packet of defective ammunition. Messrs J. Bennett and J. Parker, junr., made correct timings. The committee all worked well in cai lying out the programme, conspicuous among them being Messrs A. Biimphries, V. George, F. Hammond, T. Callaghan; and Messrs W. Sadler and J. Way also worked well in their respective capacities as marksmun and bellman. A< committee •6f ladies, headed by Mrs Dockrill, the M&yoxess, kindly presided at the luuche*gn booth, and during the afteroooa they dis* pensed afternoon , tea.- The bceity thanks of the club are due" Xj these ladies.
