The Senate, after a spirited debate, adopted by 16 to 12 the House of Representatives' amendments to the Postal Bill, forbidding mail contracts with persons or companies employing coloured labour. Cheers were given for "A. White Australia." Received October 3, 12.49 p.m. Sydney, October 4. Some large spars, apparently attached to a sunken vessel, are reported off Trial Bay. They are supposed to belong to the missing schooner Toogooloo. Received October 6, 9.41 a.m Sydney, October S. In connection with a Chinese bankruptcy case evidence was givjn that it is a common practice amongst celestials to interchange naturalisation papers in order to avoid poll tax when travelling between the iStates. Papers are also forwarded to China enabling non-naturalised Chinese to enter Australia. An extensive subsidence of land over the Wickham colliery workings at Carrington has taken place. The Council Chambers and five houses are considerably damaged, the residents having to vacate them, and the water and gas mains [were fractured, the street being flooded and the town left in darkness. Melbourne, October 5. W. J. Lyne intends to modify the Inter-State Commission Bill, eliminating the objectionable clauses dealing with ocean-going shipping. The amended old age pensions scheme introduced in the Assembly reduces the maximum weekly allowance from tea to seven shillings. Received October 5, 9.54 a.m. Brisbane, October 4. The Mackay and Brisbane Chambers of Commerce have protested against the Kanaka JJill.
