STRATFORD NEWS.
[FROM OUR RESIDENT AGENT.] October 12th. — I hear that most of the " new-chum " party that found the Ohura Road a rather too severe a breaking-in to colonial work have found employment near the town. It was rather cruel of the authorities to send men just arrived and accustomed only to city life in the old country to make their way out to Whangamomona at this time of year. After nearly twenty years' experience of bush roads I shirk it myself. The Borough Council held a very long meeting on Tuesday evoning, but could not get through tk s business. The Works Committee's report dealing with proposed expenditure out of. loan during tho corning summer was read, but consideration had to be postponed to a special meeting. The proposal is to endeavour to get about £4000 worth of street work done. A return waa laid on the table showing tho relative rate revenue and expenditure in the different quarters of the town since the establishment of the borough. Strange to say each side of the river has had precisely its fair share of expenditure although no separate accounts have been kept. This is a striking proof that, despite assertions to the contrary, Councillors have uniformly considered appli cations for road improvements in a fair and impartial spirit. The north side of the river L<w a great preponderance of voting power, arid could, if so disposedrgrab an undue proportion of expenditure. Happily this has not been the case.
