The Cycling Club Ball.

AN UNQUALIFIED SUCCESS.

A more brilliant and successful gathering than the Cycliog Club Ball, held in the Theatre Royal on Thursday night, has not been aeon in New Plymouth for come time. When the Committee first contemplated holding the dance a satisfactory consummation was looked upon as certain — the indefatigable and energetic^er £o;i»eZ of the management aisured thu much — but we doubt it tho members, in thinmost sanguine flights of imagination, expected such excellent results as happened. At 8 o'clock, when those in fancy costume paired off for the Graod March, the buiidiDg wts crowded, and as the march was slowly gone through, the novel and varied costumes worn by the dancers were the theme of general admiration. All sods and conditions were there, from tho high and haughty Court lady to the demure^ and compassionate nurse, and from the " ruler of the Queen's Navy" to tho ragged, itinerant street musician. At times when daucing was in full ewiDg the floor was too crowded for the complete eojoytnent of devotees of Terpsichore, but any discomfort only seemed to add zest to the proceedings, and everything went merri'y from start to finish. The music, which was supplied by Mr D. McKinnon Bain's orchestra, was excellent, included in the selections played b.iag a mazurki specially composed by Mr BaiDj and the floor was in delightful condition, tbaaks to the energy of the Committee* The supper was left in the hands of the ladies, the mention of which fact is almost a sufficient guarantee that tbat department wts complete in a ] l defai's. The tables were prettily dresped, the Cycling Club's colours being a domiuant feature in the decorations.
