Eighty tons of chloral ignited and blew up Kurtz's chemicil works at St. Helens, in Lancashire. Tho explosion damaged j the neighbouring vitriol work?, releasing 1000 tons of vitriol, which in turn fired the gasometer. 1 hree persons were killed ■ aud fourteen injured. The concussion was felt 4J milbs away. All windows in St. Helens were destroyod. The damage is estimated at £100,000. Eeceived May 15, 1.22 a.m. DISASTROUS RAILWAY COLs LISION. New York, May 14. A. train from Reading collided with a Philadelphia express which was standing at Exeter Station. The locomotive ploughed into the rear cara of the express. Thirty-four were killed and 50 injured. Many of the dead were terribly mangled. A DISHONEST CHAIRMAN IMPRISONED. f London', May 14. The trial of G. R. Birt, chairman of the Jiillwall Dock Compaiy, on a charge of falsifying the balance sheets of the company, concluded at Iho Old Bailey. Accused was found guilty and sentenced to nine months.
