MATAU.

[prom our own correspondent.! The first political meeting wo have had here was held in the achooirocm on Tuesday, May 2nd, when Mr Symes, M.H.R., addressed his constituents in this district. Mr R. Findlay was in the chair and introduced Mr Symes to the meeting. Mr Symes gave an address on lines similar to those he has delivered ■elsewhere. At the conclusion of his speech, after questions by Mr T. Moody and Mr W. Paulger had been answered, on the motion of Mr J. Hogg, seconded by Mr C. Kibblewhite, the- following resolution was earned unanimously :- - "That this meeting, haviog listened to the addr&s ot the Jlon.'mymbar accord him a vole of thanks for his able address, and likewise express their entire confidence in him as their representative, and pledge themselves to do all in their power to promote his return at the next election " It is intended to open tho bridge over the Waitara at Purangi on the 24th inst. which will be a great boon to this district, and we hope the Government will lose no time in restarting the widening of the road through to the East itoad, as it must lead tea lot of traffic; By. the Junction Road, from Pokhino, it is something like 12 miles noarer-to New Plymouth than by the East Road route. The metalling of the road, it is expected, next summer will be completed nearly to Purangi, and, no doubt after the road ia made suitable for dray traffic, the metaN ling would soon be completed to the East Koad, which would give a good road right through to luglewood. I think the Government are making a mistake this side the river in only makiug the road 14 feet wide instead of 16 feet ; likewise some of the corners want a good bit mors taking *ff than has been done. There is, too, too much filling up on steep - places, which suon slip away and cause the road to bo too narrow. If the road be carried on in the same way I am afraid there will be a lot of money to lay out before it is fU for metalling.
