ELTHAM.

1 from' our own correspondent. I i It is not often th tfc we hear of burglaries in our district, buc E regret to say that I\fr Boddie'd private "residence on the Conway Road was entered on Wednesday night or early on Thuifaday morning. The burglar opened the window of the dining room, and, after entering, struck several matches, and ransacked the room. Fort.unai.oly booh thd doors lead-« ing to the passage were locked, and that prevented the man from obtaining entrance to the drawing room and other room--. Mrs and the Mibsos Boddie were > upstairs, an^heard the noise below, and of course were much temfied. Unfortunately, Mr Boddie was absent, or without doubt the man would have been caught. Outside the residence Mr Boddie has an office, and this had been entered from (he door, the lodk of which had been forced. Documents of all kinds were scattered all over the room, but at presens nothing of value is known to havo been taken. At daylight Miss Boddie went round the garden, and the man's foo' steps were visible "on tho ■frozen ground. It is evident that the man had a horso tied to the gate, as the marks of the horses shoes were plainly seen. The matter is in the hands of Constable Simpson', and it i 3 to be hoped the thief may be captured ; it being a very un6atiaractory state of affaits that such a man should be at large in this or any other district. Capt. the Hon. Mr Russell addressed a good house on Monday at the Athenajum, and was well received. It ia unnecessary for me to wiite about his address, he having made bimself known in New Plymouth by this time. The new premises for the Bank o£ New Zealand are being rapidly pushed ahead ; and the shop and residence for Mr A; Bli3s will be comnaenced at onca. Mr Sanderson is also about to erect large and commodious premises for his plumbing business in Bridge Street, next to Mr TemperoV. Everything Eltham res quired it is getting by degrees ; the list thing added being an office for the Registration of Births, Death, and Marriages, our much esteemed solicitor, Mr Middleton, hiving bean appointed registrar. ' •> A young man named Hayward, while stacking timber in the yards of tho Sa9h aud Door Company on Monday, waa much injured by some boards falling on him. His wounds were attended to by Dr Harrison, aud I am happy to say the sufferer is progressing favourably. A bazaar ia to be arranged for here at an early date ; tho proceeds to be devoted to the doing up, &c, of ihe Town Hall, which is badly in want of many improvements. Mr Gush has reopened his night school, and is meeting with much success He has removed his residence and school to more convenient premises in Bridge Street, lately occupied by Mr Binning. Messrs McGarry Bros, are doing exceedingly well at their new auction mart, which is crowded on every sale day.
