A story of terilble suffering and deeth comes from t' c Arctic Ocean. Tlio steam whaler Naurach was caught amongst drift ice, aid thirty-one of tha crew were crushed and eleven frozen to death. A passing cutter obsened tha Naurach's signals of distress near Point Barrow, on the Alaskan coast, and rescued the captain and his wife, two officers and four sailors. Nine of tho crew refusel to leave the ship. They are supposed to have perished. MISHAP TO ATLANTIC LINER. The Anchor Line steamer Circassia, from New York to the Clyde, is overdue. The steamer Island fell in with her with a broken shaft, and towed her a distance of one hundred miles, A heavy sea caused the tow-line to break, and the Island had to leave the disabled vessel. DISASTROUS FIRE AT BELFAST. A fire in Belfast destroyed five largely-stocked linen warehouses. The damage is very extensive. FAMINE THREATENED AT KLONDIKE RIVER. Ottawa, September 1 1. A famine is threatened in Dawson City, the centre of the Klondyke goldfields. The largest stores have closed, tho »tocks of goods being exhansted. Provisions are selling at enormous prices, AMERICA AND CUBAN TRADE. Washington, September 10. Spain has granted America reduced Oi-stoms duties in regard to trado with Cnba. RAILWAY DISASTER IN THE STATES.
New York, September 10. A passenger train collided with a goods train at Newcastle, Colorado. The boilers exploded, causing the can to catch fire. Terrible scenes followed. Twenty-five passengers were killed or roasted to death. lERRIBLE STRIKE INCIDENT New York, September 11. A crowd of miners on strike 8t Coleraine, an important cosl-minißg centre in Pennsylvania, approached tho colliery, unarmed, with the object of in- ; ducing tho men who had takan their I places to abandon work. The -"sheriff [ordered them to disperse. On their failing to comply, he read tha Riot Act. The leaders of the strikers expostulated, and the sheriff thereupon ordered his officers to fire at close range. Th© officers poured a volley into the massed ranks of the strikers, killing 22' aad wounding 76. The men on strike were chjefly foreigners, unacquainted with tho English language, * New York, September 12. . Warrants have been issued for the arrest of the Sheriff of Coleraine and 102 men for shooting at strikers. The unfortunate collieis wbo were wounded were subjected to brutal treatment. So great is the indignation amongst tho miners that a force of military has been called out to prevent an outbreak.
