AMUSEMENTS.

MR MACKENZIE'S CONCERT. Mr Mackenzie's popular concerts have "caught on," for notwithstanding the miserable weather prevailing on Thursday night a large audience assembled in the Alexandra Hall on the occaBion of the third of the series. Mr Mackenzie was in good voice, and for his first number, " True Till Death," he re ceived hearty recognition from the audience. Be was also successful in the recitative and aria, " The Trumpet Shall Sound," with violin obligato by Mr H. Cottier ; and also in the pretty song, "Across the Far Blue Hills, Marie." He, however, hit the popular taste more with the humourous Scotch song, j "Ham Cam oor Guidman at E'en," j for which he received an imperative recall, when he gave Jude's stirring song, " Home Boys Home." Misa Beatrice Drew vocalised the ballad " Darby and Joan," and the song, "Sunshine and Kain," very effectively; and shared in the honors of an encore with Mr Mackenzie in a duet entitled "Solfa Singing Lesson." An old favorite in Mr H. Cottier, the cornet soloist, made his re-appearance before a local audience after several months' sojourn in Invercargill. His first number was a " Fantasia," which was played in a style that showed the instrumentalist had profited by his experience in other parts. In response to an encore, Mr Cottier bowed his acknowledgements. The young player was as equally successful in " The Lost Chord " and again had the ple&sure of receiving the plaudits of his auditors. Tho gifted youug elocutionist, Mis 3 Jessie Glover, gave a clever recital of the "Death of poor J©," Dickens' pathetic creation ; and won a well merited encore for " The Last Shot," a tale of the Indian Mutiny. Miss Glover 'shared in the honors of a recall with Mr Mackenzie for the humorous duet, "A'B.C. Lesson." For the recall they gave, " The Crooked Bawbee," a nmtnber that was exceedingly well rendered. Mrs Labatt sang, "Daddy," and " Robin Adair," and on each occasion was warmly applauded. Mr D. McKinnon Bain played two pianoforte solob, his own composing, one being a " Fantasia," and the second a " Scottish Fantasia." For the first Mr Bain had to respond to a recall. Mr and Mrs Milne, and Mr Andrews, whose names appeared on tbe programme, were unable to attend, Messrs Garry and Bain played the accompaniments.
