FIRE IN ST AUBYN STREET.

BOARDING HOUSE PARTIALLY

GUTTED. About half -past 9 o'clock on Thursday night the firebclls rang out an alarm, the fire being located in Mrs Johnson's boarding house (well-known as the Clarendon) situated in St Aubyn-street, opposite Raynes' Hotel. Mr J. Trigger was the first to see the outbreak, the family being away at the time, and he at once gave the alarm. The Fire Brigade promptly responded, but could not get to work at occe owing to difficulty ia opening the fireplug. However when the water was turned on the flames were speedily extinguished. The interior of the house was wrecked. Some of Mrs Shaw's furniture, next door, was brought out into the street, and in consequence was somewhat damaged. The building was insured in the South British office in the name of the mortgagee for £400. The origin of the fire, which started in the shop part o£ the building, is unknown. The f urniturt was insured in the National for £200.

Mr McAsey, the son-in-law of Mr Johnston, who manages the boarding house, lost some money in the fire, and Mr T. McAsey, his brother, is reported to have lost a roll of notes valued at £19. It is estimated that" it will cost £300 to repair the damage, bat as the building is old, it is hardly likely that this will be done.
