OPENING MATCH. • , ; (PER PREBS ASSOCIATION.) London, May 11. — The Australian cricketers began tha opening match of their tour at Sheffield Park to-day, when they were oppoted by an eleven chosen by Lord Sheffield. There was splendid .weather and a large attendance, iacluding ths Prince of Wales, to whom H. Trott, captain of tho visitors, was presented. T/bn wicket was not of the best, being rather lively. Trott won the toss, and sent Donnan and Darling to the wickets, onposed to tbe bowling of Pongher and Mold. ' Each batsman played with confidence, and scored freely. Darling gave the spectators a brilliant display of cutting and bard clean driving, but gavo a hard return to Pougher early in his inning", which was not accepted. With 31 "it tho board Jack«on relieved Pougher. Later. — Donnan is not out with 24, and Darling (uot out), 55 ; extras, 1. Total, no wickets for 80 runs. Latest. — When the stumps were drawn for the day, the position o£ tho game was— Donnan, b Fry, 32; Darling, c Lilley, b Mold, 67 ; G. Giffen, 0 Lilloy, b Jackson, 38; Iredale, b Grace, 14 ; H. Trott, not out, 43 ; ,Gregory, b Grace, G; Hill, not out, 30; extras, 11. Total, 5 wickets for 241.
