MIDHIRST.
[from our own correspondent. J j July 6,— Nothing of much oousequehqeJ has transpired here lately. At the break. ; ing up of the school on the 28th June Mr S. Serjeant attended on behalf of the School Committee, and presented the j children, vrifch prircp for future encourage* j ment and ' past* success.' ° Cheers werej called for and heartily given for Ethel; Rountree, who obtained fall marks. from 1 {fie 'lnspector aß^the .' in every subject t for Edgar - Jones,- who obtained the highest aggregate of marks in the school during the past; year; arid "to Annie 'Jenkins, who' acquired a similar celebrity among the ' girls. The same compliment was paid to IMy Serjcint and the teachers. The School Committee having expended £9 in prizes, now propose attempting to, increase their funds by arranging for a| concert to be held in the Town Hall on Friday, 2nd August. Every effort will, be made to render it a success, and a sub-] committee will arrange for a dance after the concert. > The Masonic body, in Midhirst have secured a section of ground at the junction of Hinemoa and Brin-streets, on wbich it { ia proposed, to erect a Masonic Hall. The! lodge is becoming strong in every way,i and it is fully expected that the Hall will' be completed before the next annual installation in December. Mr Morgan ha 3 opened a saddler's shop and Mr Dalton a tinsmith's shop. The dairy factory and its branches ha^ • now passed into the hands of a co operative company. Though closed at present, it will bo in full swing early in the spring, and several additions will be, made to the premises in the meantime. It is probable that the cheese industry will be attended to in the future, when/ butter ceases to be remunerative. The Midhirst branch of tho Band of, Hope held its monthly meeting on July sth, Mr Rountree" presided, and delivered an able address, as also did the Rer. W. Dawaon t The Midhirst choir, whith is becoming famous, contributed, invaluable .aid, aud recitations were given by Misses R. Worm, E. Worm, W. As Showing how English 1 people cling to old customs, the fbllowfng- paragraph^ from the Maltcn (Yorkshire) Messenger* of April 13,.wi1l be read with interest :' — " ' Luoji Money' i has recently formed tho subjeoj; pf Btr.9ll^ dissension at /f some of the, markets iri the $orth of England,' and the butchers! and others at Leeds, &0.,!> have combined- 'to boycott those placed wherenoiiejburnis -made. The. subject' was.ip,troducod,at Malton ,OP. Sa^urday ; morning, when some of the buyers of pigs at Messrs Bbulto'n and Cooper's mart handed in a writton request asking' for ' luck' to be given thorn at the rate pfi' l ld."for each pig under 31)5.,2d.- per head :fr0m,305..,t0 605., and3,d. per head o.vor Goa. 4 Mr Cooper, tjw auctiopeer ? told the jobbers' their request was nfosfc' iridppoi'-, trine. If granted, the money would "have to cbme eventually, 'from the' vendore,i and .farming was too depressed -at the 1 , present time to carry. any ( n\pca , burdens.; He could not see that' there was' any, reason for the demand made under the circumstances. In response to a further requestihe-.au.oiiiop^qr the mstnorialists th* question should have consideration. A issue of the snmo paper of May ,J/l,th says : — The i l^k raqnay que»tiQQ was brought forwarjl at tli» moeting of' 'the Yorkshire Union of Agricultural Clubs at York 1 on Thursday, and theiollowing resolution was passed unanimously — 'That this Union is. of opinion, thab any demand for luck money should be strenuously opposed ; ' and Bug Igests that every agricultural organization in Yorkshire should consider ' tho question at ttio earliest opportunity.' New chums occasionally try to put tho same practice in force hero, but colonials do not see the matter quite in tho same light.
