STRATFORD NEWS

[FROM OUR RESIDENT AGENT] January 2. — Tho old year died to the tune of " After the Ball," that mournful air being chosen as a requiem by the Brass Band. The <sacred rite of gatelifting was also faithfully performed by the persons who usually fulfil this annual duty. The Presbyterian and Methodist Sunday schools held their combined picnic yesterday. Tho Treather wa3 delightfully cool after the heat of last week. At the Police Court on Monday, Thomas Inch pleaded guilty to the theft of half-a-cro\vn from the trouser-pocket of a fellow workman at the East Road mill. He could not well do otherwise as tho half-crown, a marked one, was found on him. The justices considered they would be punishing the wife and family instead of the man by sending him to gaol, so bound him over in £10 to come up for sentence when called upon. We have had a nice rain, but late haymakers are anxious. The weather has a way of running in grooves here and it may be showery for a month.
