LATE STORMY WEATHER DOWN SOUTH.
NUMEROUS SLIPS ON RAILWAY LINE. TERRIBLE STORM AT WOODVILLE. Owing to the excessive rainfall on Monday and Tuesday last in the Palmerston North district, considerable damage was done to railway lines, with the consequent interruption to traffic. Numerous slips occurred in the Manawatu Gorge, and no trains got through on Tuesday. The express train from New Plymouth was stuck up at Halcombe. On the Welling-ton-Eketahuna line a large slip occurred between Mangamahoe and Mauriceville, and the train from Wellington could not get beyond the latter station. The subsidence was due to heavy rain and has made tha line impassable for heavy traffic near Halcombe. A terrible storm was experienced at Woodville on Monday night, when nearly two inches of rain fell. Heavy slips are reported to have taken place at the Manawatu Gorge, and trains were unable to get through.
