STRATFORD NEWS.

fFROM OUR RESIDENT AGENT.] November 8. — The latest phase of the agitation re the expenditure of the Pembroke Road metalling loan is' that the eel tiers have petitioned tho Government to hold an enquiry. Thoy state that they are unable to afford the heavy outlay that tho employment of the Attorney-General in an acti v against tho members of the Road Board would entail, and appeal to the Government for nsßistanco. The Government has referro-i the petition to the Road Board lor an explanation, and the Board at its meeting on Saturday decided to send down the report of its own engineer and also that of Mr R. H. D&vtM, who was called in after the settlers had taken professional advice.

The Town Board's monthly meeting which Bbould be held on Wednesday next, will be adjourned on account of tbe h.liday.

A Sunday drunk was mulcted in a five shilling fine by the local Bench -this morning. There is a most confounded stink in front cf the Police Station today, the apparent cause being tho drain from the constable's residence. The said drain empties into the wuterchunnel alongside the footpath, kerbing, and offends the artistic eyo almost at much as it does tho journalistic nose. The Inspector of Nuisances has boot his mind to the task of coping with the abprnioation but appears to be undecided as to whom to bring to book. Tho smell undoubtedly proceeds in tho first place from the county road, but the County Council repudiates any responsibility, and refers tho 1 ofN.to tho owner of tho drain. Tho drain is the property ©f the Queen, and it is understood that Her Mojosty (through her representative, Constable Leahy) has decreed that having by means cf this drain discharged her soapsuds and cabbage water into the place where the town-6ewer ought to be, it is the duty of tho town authorities to deal with these commodities in ouch manner as shall seem fit, and that it is no fault of hers if, no provision being made for reuicnal to a more convenient locality, that sweetness is wasted upon tho desert air of U road way which should chirm the senses of riparian proprietors down tho river.
