MAN DROWNED.

Napier, November 8.

The body found by natives in a creek near Hastings has been identified as that of Robert Donaldson, formerly of Oamaru but lately stud groom to the Hon J. D. Ormond. He was a sober man, but eccentric. A verdict of found drowned was returned.

COAL HULK SUNK. Wellington, November 8.

On Sunday evening the coal hulk Albion, belonging to the Union Company, sank at the wharf where she was waiting with 150 tons aboard to coal the Te Anati. Tho water is above her deck. As soon as she was was noticed sinking pumps were set going, but without avail. Nobody was on board the Albion when she sank. It is supposed she sprang a sudden leak, being a very old vessel.

HALF-HOLIDAY IRRITATION.

A deputation representing three large drapery firms waited on the Public Works Committee of the City Council asking the Council if it would make an order permitting them to close their workrooms on Wednesday instead of Saturday afternoon, in order that the Factory and Shop Assistants Acts might not Ciash. They contended that the Act gave such discretion, but the Mayor thought there was some difficulty in the way, and the opinion of t\*c town solicitor must be taken. This was agreed to. Masterton, November 8.

Mr Hogg, M.H.R., had a narrow escape from being killed while riding with Mr Eli Smiih, on the Alfredton Road. They lost the road, and in endeavoring to avoid a narrow gully by climbing a bank, Mr Hogg's horse slipped, and fell in such a manner as to wedge the horse and rider in a cleft, from which he was extricated with great difficulty.

BODY WASHED ASHORE. Kaikouka, November 8.

The body of a man was found on the beach about 12 miles south of here, with nothing but bis trousers and shirt on. He is described as about sft. Gin. in height, hair reddish, body bruised considerably. It is assumed lie was lost off a passing vessel.

SUDDEN DEATH.

Dunedin, November 8.

Mary Mclvor died suddenly at Pembroke on Sunday night. She was in a buggy with Mr and Mrs Allen when she apparently fainted, and all efforts to restore consciousness failed.

FIRE IN DUNEDIN.

Ddneuin, November 8. Wright's biscuit factory, King-street, Dunedin, was completely gutted by fire on Monday night. The insurance are Norwich Union £800 on building ; £950 on machinery, and £(JOO on stoclo of which £1400 is reinsured, and in the Standard £250 on machinery, £500 on fixtures, and £100 on stack. The damage is estimated at £5000. The origin of the fire is a mystery.
