Melbourne, November 7. The s.s. Maori King has arrived here from London. The passengers by the Aramand Bchic have been fumigated and released from quarantine. Pygmalion has been sold to a South Australian gentleman for £600. The Surveyors' Conference closed their sittings afcer considering the bill embodying their requirements, which will be presented to the various Parliaments. Sydney, November G Viscount Relburne, son of the Earl of Glasgow, arrived here to-day. He joins H.M.S. Curacoa, which shortly visits New Zealand. The Defence Committee have declared the Broken Hill strike off. It is certain that hundreds of those who went out will be unable to secure work for some time, therefore the continued help of the Unions of all the colonies is needed to keep starvation from their doors. The leaders are sanguine that the men obtaining work will help their loss fortunato fellow labourers. The mine owners in future will take no cognizance of Unions, and aro determined to work iho mines as they please. They have no desire to cut down wages, and will bo only 100 happy to give good men good wages. A large body of men claim a moral victory, and lalk of coming out again in a few months if not fairly dealt with, and are not now being ; bound by any agreement. Tho Government havo instructed the Agent-General to furnish a report on England as a market for butter, cheese, and other dairy produce. Tt is proposed to await a report before appointing an expert to grade butter, etc.
H.M.S. Curacoa has arrived. The damage sustained by going ashore at the
Islands was trifling, only a few sheets of metal being torn off.
Sydney, November 7.
Arrived : Mararoa, from Wellington, after a passage of three days eleven hours.
The new stock is to be issued tomorrow.
Brisbane, November 7.
The Government have withdrawn the proceedings instituted against the Howard Smith Steamship Co. for a breach of the Dividend Ace, on condition that the latter pay costs. The firm accounted for the delay in furnishing the necessary returns.
Pebtb, November 7.
.The construction of defence works in King George's Sound is finished, and a shipment of guns from the War Office is awaited to complete the defencts.
