July 11 — " Water, water everywhere.' There lias been a five-inch shower since Saturday night, and the indications are for more. At four o'clock thiß morning the manager of tho N.Z. Clothing Factory's shop was apprised by a loud noise that something unusual was transpiring in the front shop. It was not the entrance of an armed burglar, but only tho playful wind blowing one of the large plate-g'ass windows in. The sheet had been cracked Borne time before by ono of our gentle zephyrs blowing a shutter against it, and was consequently unable to stand the strain. In falling it unfortunately Btarred another pane ; as tho sheets measure about 12x4 tho damage is considerable. In the six years that the Stratford Cemetery has been open, there lmvo been only 54 interments. This indicates a very low death-rate, as bodies are brought from as far &<■' Eltham Taking one year with another I should estimate the population served by the cemetery to have been somo thirteen or fourteen hundred. Perhaps your Midhirst correspondent will give the figures of that cemetery; we can then, as tho population of tho county is known, fix the death rate with somo accuracy. Tho County Council is about to bo sued by Messrs Murphy & Kerrisk, road contractors, for an amount approaching £200 for damages alleged to have been sustained by the failure of the stone crusher to put through the stipulated quantity or stone for the Opunako Road contract last ivna|er. Thu case is to be heard in Hawera on Wednesday next.
