STEAMER ACCIDENT AT WESTPOKT. Wjsstpout, January 28. Xn accident occurred on board the Mavvhem as she was leaving tho wharf for Grey mouth this morning. When tho ' vessel was leaving tho wharf tho captain gave tho order, " Full speed ahead," but the boy at tho telegraph gave the telegraph as •• swing to ; half speed astern," for the purpose of ringing it preparatory to setting tho dial at full speed ahead, when tho chain cord of tho telegraph broke. Tho steamer came into the wharf fast, and the spectators; seeing danger, cleared away. Two sailors were aft with fenders, but ond left as the steamer dashed into ' tho wharf ; tho other, named Laurenson, remained at his post, and he was caught by a falling rail and jammed among the debris. Ilis leg was badly broken. The after part of tho vessel and the deck were smashed up, and part of the wharf carried away. Tho damage is not sufficient to prevent the steamer sailing. The injured man, who cried piteously Until removed from beneath the wreckage, ! was removed to tho hospital.
