DISGRACEFUL STATE OF AFFAIRS.
W,ha.t may be termed a "hot" correspondence has been lately going oa In Wellington about the Labour Bureau aud the local Benevolent Society. The Rev. .Mr Van Staveren, the Jewish Rabbi, fe tho Chairman of tho Trustees of the Wellington Benevolent Society. Sometime ago he made & claim upon, the Government ' .through the Hon. Mr Oadman, but on.that *, occasion the grievance complained' of. was •' rather in tho natureof a technical Omission,. - which caused the society some inconvenience through not getting a temporary advance In the present case, he makes out what the local ratepayers regard as • ■ more substantial complaint. He Bays that tho Government, who have a large number r ' of men from Wellington engaged upon the works around Eketahuna and Woodville, have simply shifted the burthen of supporting the families of many of theso men upon the Wellington rates. This, statement was denied, but the Chairman of the Bcnovolont Society returns to tho chargo, ' and reaffirms all Unit ho had previously Btuted. |PKB PRESS ASSOCIATES. | In consequence of tho statement that Labour Bureau had thrown so many people on tho Benevolent Society as to be tL« principal cause of the overdraft, amounting to £500 or JCGOO, Mr Trogoar wrote asking for particulars with account of expense incurred. Tno Chairman declined to. over haul the books out of curiosity, but said he, would furnish tho details if tho Govern- , ment wanted to pay back the inonoyj and would keep the names a secret. Tho trustees agreed the names should not bo divulged. The Chairman cited to the Board a number of cases whoro tho trustees had to support tho wives of mon who were engaged on the Pahiatua relief works. '
