DEATH OF BANCROFT, THE HISTORIAN.
Washington, January 18.— Mr Bancroft, the historian, author of the History of the United States, died to-day, aged 9,0 years. George Bancroft, Ph.D.,L.L.D., D.C.L., was born at Worcester, Massachusetts, on October 3, 1800, entered -Harvard College in 1813, and graduated in 1817. He received tho degree of Ph. D. at Gottingen in 1820, and returned to America in 1822. He began collecting materials for his History of the United States in 1824, the first volume of which appeared in 1834. In 1845, Mr Polk being elected President, he entered the Cabinet as Secretary of the Navy. In 1845 he was sept as Minister to Great Britain, where he was successful in urging upon the British Government the adoption of more- liberal navigation laws. In 1867 he was appointed Minister to Prussia, and in 1868 was accredited to the North German Confederation, and in 1871 to the German Empire. His latest publication was a plea for the constitution of the United States, Wounded in the Houso of its Guardians.
