MISSIONARY WORK.

•LECTURE BY REV. W. WATT. There was a large attendance of the public ■ in the Presbyterian Church on Tuesday night, to hear the Rev. W. Watt lecture on missionary work in the New Hebrides Islands. The Rev. W. Grant introduced the lecturer, and in the course of a few remarks he gave a brief outline of the lecturer's, career. He stated that Mr Watt had been on the island of Tanna for 22 years, doing mission work ; that he had been recently, home on furlough to Scotland to translate the New Testament into Tannese, and get it printed ; and that now, in company with Mrs Watt, the rev. gentleman was lecturing at the chief centres in aid of the mission fund, while on, his way to attend the Presbyterian Assembly, which will meet at Christchurch next month. Mr Watt then gave his lecture, which he illustrated with magic lantern views of scenery and life 'o be met with at the scene of his mission labours. The lecturer very graphically explained the customs of j the natives, and the mission work that had been done. A pleasing item during the evening was the singing of a hymn in the, Tannese language by Mrs Watt. The music was quaint and sweet. A collection was then taken up on behalf of the Mission Fund. Mr and Mrs Watt will leave for Wanganui on Thursday. I , S5
