ALLEGED TREASONABLE PUBLICATION.
Acting under the instructions of the Premier of New Pouth Wales, the Undersecretary has written to Mr W. N. Willis, M.L.A., and enclosed an extract from a newspaper of which he is the reputed proprietor, at the same time asking whether, in : view of that treasonable publication, " Mr Willis had any reason to advance why he should not be removed from the magis j tracy as a person unfit to hold Her Majesty's commission." The statements made in the paragraph forwarded to, Mr Willis are characterised as a direct incentive to sections of the population to rise in armed rebellion against the laws and institutions of the colony. The Premier has received a reply from Mr Willis stating that he will submit an explanation during the week.
A reminder is given of Mr Glover's temperance lecture in St. Mary's school- j room to-night. The phonograph is not a new invention after all, for one even older than that of Cyrano de Bergerac'has been found by Lientenant-Colonel A. de Rochas, in the Aprii number of the Courier Veritable, a small monthly organ published in 1632. " Captain Vosterlich," it reads, " has returned from a voyage in Australasia. He reports having passed by a strait below that of Magellan ; he landed in a country whore nature haß furnished men with certain sponges which retain sounds as other sponges do liquor. So that when they wish to ask something or confer at a distance they speak into one of the sponges and send it to their friends, who, having received it, press it gently, and make the words come out,"
