Miss De Pink (tring to get the conversation into a pleasant groove) — " I was so shocked while reading Max O'Bell's book to day, Mr. Bashful. ' " Oh. indeed 1" said Mr. Bashful. •• How was that ?" " Well, he Bays that in America the girls do the proposing •" "Well, don't they?" "Of course not. Isn't it contemptible oZ him to print such a slander ?" " If it's not true " " Mercy ! Why any self-respecting girl would die before she'd let a man know she loved him." "I— lam very sorry for that, because I never could pluck up my courage to propose to a girl." " Couldn't you?" " No." " Well, under those circumstances "You know," interrupted Mr. Bashful, " I feel very blue to think a girl would rather die than — than to let me know she wanted to marry me." " Oh, George !" " Yes. I— l tbink I'll go home. Good bye." * "Ohl oh ! oh ! Don't go yet. I— l love you, George. Goodness ! I nearly lost you. Sit dpwn on this sofa, my own darling, and let us prepafe for the wedding." "But I didn't expect " " What shall I wear at the altar, and how much pin-money shall you allow me, my own love ? lam so glad I have spoke out at last.
