REV. CHARLES CLARK.

The announcement that this celebrated lecturer will visit New Plymouth next Friday, to present two of his famous lecture entertainments will be received witli pleasure by our readers. The fame of: Mr Clark is so good in almost every part of the English speaking world, and the residents of New Plymouth have had such pleasant proof of his versatile talents that litttle more than the plain advertisement of the date and place of his lecture ought to bo needed to insure a crowded house. But it is 11 years since the gifted man was here, and there must be members of the younger portion of the community who can only have heard of Mr Clark by name. These cannot be too strongly advised to seize this opportunity of hearing the best lecturer that ever visited the colonies. The word lecturer scarcely explains Mr Clark, he is in the truest sense a great entertainer.

The Maoris at Mangaone state that they got about 200 gallons of oil from the whale that was stranded on the beach a couple of weeks ago. The value oC the Melbourne Cup to the winner was £10,080, and a trophy valued at £150. The second got £3,000, and the third 2,000. Several residents in Auckland report that they felt a slight shock of earthquake about 7 o'clock on Thursday night. Dr. Money arrived by tho through train on Friday night, to take charge of Dr. Christie's practice. during his absence. An important sale of farm stock, on account of Mr F" MeGovern, is advertised by Messrs Budge and Good to take place at their yardd, Manaia, on Saturday next. Some iirst class horse stock will be includod in tho sale, an-l everything is to be sold without reserve. If our fruit growers or others want to see how they pack apples in America for export, they should visit Mr Webb's shop, who has just receive,! some from San Francisco. " He has scut .samples to this office, and they are excellent in every respoct. Tho University College Council have accepted the resignation of Dr Posnelt, Professor of Classics and English in Auckland College, and his successor is to bo chosen in Auckland. The barque Lutterworth, Captain Streater, from London, arrived in Wellington harbour on Thursday evening, being 103 days out. During the passage an apprentice named Hugh Curtis was washed fronv the forecastle head in a gale and drowned. Mr J. Gilmour, tho local agent oE the Shaw Savill and Albion Company's line of steamers, notifies in another column that the first steamer of tho seison, the Matatua, will arrive at Waitara on Tuesday next, November 18th, and take her departure about Saturday, 22nd. Tho vessel has limited space for wool, fl.ix, and the general cargo, also cool chambers for dairy produce. AH particulars as to freight, &c, may bo obtained from Mr Gilmour. In our advertising columns of to-day, it will be seen that the great London Belltingers and Faust Family Musical Company, announce their appearance in New Plymouth for a season of two nights, commencing on Tuesday evening the 18 in^r. Speaking anent tho Company, the llockhamplion Argus (Queensland) says : — "To say that it was clever would be using a word which is altogether inadequate to express the meed of praise which the performers deserve, and to say that it was of tho most mirth provoking character would be putting it rather mildly. The Southern Press had, to use a vulgarism, "cracked up" this show so much that we were prepared to see something really good, but we were not prepared for the many surprises that awaited us, from the rise of the curtain at the overture to its fall after the pantomimic sketch with which the performance concluded. Gus Lynch, one of the original Lynch Family accompanies the Company, and in more ways than one he is a host in himself. As for the Faust Family they are perfect wonders at everything they attempt, and Herr Von dor Meliden must be classed with musicians of the very first rank." They were discussing the Biblical heroines, and one of them said he thought Ruth rather a forward, designing young woman, " For," aaid he, " Boaz was old enough to be her father." " But," replied the teacher "he was rich." And that is the sort of yoang woman who was giving religious instruction to tho youthful mind.
