A THREATENING LETTER.
TO I HB- EDITOR. Sir, — We are instructed by our client, Mr T. H. Perm, to draw your attention to a letter signed " Your Stratford and Ngaire Correspondent," and published in your issue of the 3rd instant. In the course of this letter a charge of a most damaging character is made against our client; he is accused of having, in his capacity as a newspaper correspondent, expressed in print opinions on the merits of a recent entertainment quite at variance with those expressed by him in private conversation. Our client is prepared with any amount of evidence to prove that there is not the slightest inconsistency between his written and spoken opinions on this subject, and is furthermore of opinion that your S. and N. correspondent has confused his report with that which appeared in the Egmont Settler. In view of the apparent absence of malicious motive on the part of the publisher, we have recommended our client, notwithstanding the very serious nature of the libel, to be satisfied with an apology and a nominal amount of damages, say, £50. Awaiting your reply. — We are, &c, Fixem & Flint. Stratford, June 4, 1890. P.S. — (Without prejudice). We are inclined to think that this matter might be settled by a small donation to the Organ Fund.— F. &F. [We have not heard of this enterprising firm of lawyers, but we are willing to make the most humble apology to MrT. H. Perm for inserting a letter containing such a libellous attack on his veracity, and to escape the consequences he threatens, are most willing to make a donation to the organ fund. We advise our Stratford and Ngaire correspondent to also " fork out " to the organ fund to avoid proceedings. — Ed. T.H.]
