LATE BUSH FIRE.

TO IHK EDITOR

Sii:, — For the information of those who have contributed gifts of cast off clothing, and also of those ladies who have so kindly given their time to the making up of sundry garments for the families who have suffered loss by the bush fires, will you permit me space to say that eight families have been substantially relieved for the [ present. But enquiry has discovered many more equally in need, who would as gratefully appreciate similar help. All that was sent to the Council Chambers and to Sarnia House has been distributed. Some have hesitated to send clothing to the Council Chambers — the only available place for storing, but they may rest assured that nothing will be wasted, the articles will be giveu according to special needs. It has been suggested that gifts of half-worn shoes of all sizes would be highly valued, and prevent much suffering usually caused by the frost. Warm garments of any description would be of service, and it is hoped that those who can spare wearable clothing, no matter how shabby, if not ragged, will soon send in a uirther supply before the weather becomes very cold, or sickness and suffering are occasioned by delay. — I am, &0., M.C.

■ It is pleasant to hear of young men hailing from New Plymouth doing well for themselves. Mr E. T. White, son of xMr T. White, of New Plymouth, a few years since went to London to study for the profession of a dentist. At the premier examination lie formed one of 405 students, of which only 80 passed, Mr White being the 30th on the list. He then went into the dental wards in connection with the Middlesex Hospital, where he remained for twelve months; but as three eminent medical gentlemen in London said it would not he safe for him to winter another year in England, he left for Baltimore and joined the Dental College of Surgery. He there took several honors in the mechanical department. At the semicentennial examinations of the Baltimore College of Dental Surgery, on March 20, Mr E. T. White was awarded class honors for mechanical work in connection with dentistry, and also received his diploma. He will leave 'Frisco by the next mail for New Zealand. We must heartily congratulate Mr White upon the success he has achieved in working up to perfect himself for his profession, and wish him every BucceHs when he starts in practico.
