The Taranaki Jockey Club's Hack Meeting on Thursday (Boxing Day) was in every respect a success. Rain fell in the early morning, and for a time it looked as if the postponement of the races was inevitable, but by 9 o'clock the bad indications passed away, and all doubts about the weather being unpropitious were banished. About 500 persons attended the meeting, a fair number of whom were visitors from down the coast. The racing itself was good, the fields being large, and the finishes on the whole were pretty close. The officers of tho Club worked most energetically, and no stone was left unturned to make the meeting as successful as possible. As starter, Captain Mace experienced a little trouble on a couple of occasions, but on the whole his wielding of the flag was satisfactory. In the absence of Mr C. Messenger, Mr Gus Sole officiated as Clerk of tho Course, and carried out his duties | well. During the day the Rifles Band, under Mr G. Garry, discoursed some | splendid music. There was only one game on the grounds, namely, Mr J. Butterworth's " Bird-on-the-wing " machine, with which the owner appeared to do a thriving j business. The grand stand refreshment i room was in the able hands of Mr W. ; Black. Both the inside and outside i publican booths were run by Mr H. Hammond, who seemed to be doing a good business. The refreshment booth was run by Mr W. H. Webb. The totalisator was in the hands of Messrs Adams and Andrews, of Auckland, who were very quick at their business. The course and buildings were in capital order, thanks to Mr J. Claffey, the caretaker, who has been assiduous in his duties. The racing itself was abnos,t a regular sweep for the local horses, Vendor appropriating the Flying and Spring Handicaps, and The Orphan both the pony races, while Good Day got home first in the Welter. The results are as follow: — Maiden Plate, of 15 soys. Open to hacks that have not won an advertised stake over the value of £10. Weight for age. Entrance 15s. One mile and a quarter. Captain Mace, after several attempts, got the field away to a fair start, with the exception of Okawa, who was left at the post. Passing the stand the first time the order was, Good Day, The Bean, and Blue Mountain, the others being close behind. At the back Speculation ran up, and for a time looked dangerous, but on rounding the turn for home The Bean came away, and although hotly pursued by Good Day, ran home a winner by about a length ; Speculation a good third, and Lodore a fair fourth. Ugly Buck, who started only 200 yards instead of 400 behind scratch, was never in it. Time, fiinin. 464-sec. A protest was entered by the rider of the second horse against tho winner on the ground of wrongful entry, Polly boing tho property of Mr N. King. After enquiry the Stewards upheld the protest, and the stakes wore awarded to Tommy Dott, on whom the machine paid a dividend of £5. There were only 10 on Polly, and £124 on the machine.
