SUICIDE BY MUTILATION.

Mrs Elizabeth Mat, a married woman of i fifty-seven, committed euicide at Clifton Hill, Melbourne, on Sunday, July 14, in a shocking manner. On her husband returning home from church about 1 p.m. ho found her in a kneeling position in the bath quite dead, and covered with wounds, Beside her were two table-knives, with which they had evidently been inflioted. Across the scalp were several cuts, extending in each instance to the bone. The left arm was cut on the inside near the elbow joint, and the flesh on tbe calves of both her legs had also been cut down to the bone. In addition there were minor injuries in other parts of the body. From stains found in the house it would appear that the deceased inflioted the injuries upon herself in the dining room, and then made her way into the bathroom and turned on the water. Whether she did bo with the intention of attempting to drown herself, or because, becoming alarmed at the sight of the blood, she went into the bathroom to try and staunch the wounds, and fainting from the loss of blood fell into the position in which she was found, is a mere matter of surmise. She was possessed of sorae privatb means, and recently speculated in land with disastrous results. Since then she has been very melancholy at times. She did not at any time, however, show suicidal tendencies, and was never so seriously affected as to require medical treatment.

A number of natives have left this district to attend a Land Court, which is dealing with land at Waik&nae.

Crockery, which mast be cleared ont, will be lower than ever; in fact there will be bargains in all lines, affording opportunity for furnishing which will not soon occur again.
