Obituary.

• DEATH OF MBS. HUMPHRIES, SEN. The grave to-day has been closed over the mortal remains of Mrs Ellen Maria Humphries, the reliot of Dr. B. L. Humphries, a well-known lady, who in the past took a yery aotive part in all social matters in the town. For some time she has suffered from a very painful malady, whioh has terminated fatally, she passing away peacefully on Tnursday, about noon, at the age of 69. Mrs Humphries armed here with h«r husband and family in 1850 ; and sinte that time has been inseparably connected with this district. She was greatly esteemed m the circle in which she saovod for her kindliness of heart, which mnif estsd itself in rarious f orn»B of social benevolence and church work. Mrs Humphries was the first to suggest, and the snost active to carry to a successful termination, any bazaar, fancy fair, or other gathering, that might bar* for an objtot the raising of funds for a benevolsnt purpose or the benefit of the church 'to v, hich she belonged ; and her experience in getting up such affairs will be as much missed as her familiar figure will he from those gatherings. Much as she has done, it has never been at the expense or neglect of home duties, as she was not less devoted to the careful training of her family than to forwarding every good objeot ; and her children will ehtnsh the remembrance of her as one | whoso life was spent in the faithful I discharge of htr dutits as a wife aud mother. Mre Humphries leaves a family of eight children — Mr Thomas Humphries, her oldest son, was Chief Surveyor of th* Taranaki Provincial District for several years, but has lately bean promoted to the Aucklaad District ; and hei other two sons are ia business ia the town. Two of her daughters are married — one to Mr O. W. Hnrsthoase, Government Surveyor on the Northern Trunk Line of railway, and the other to Captain Capel late of the A.O. Force. The funeral took place at noon to-day (Saturday), when a largo number of citizens paid the last tribute of respect by following the remains of the deceased to the grave.
