SERIOUS RIOT. PERMANENI FORCE DESPATCHED

TO SCENE OF RIOT. [per press association.] Sidney, September 19.— A serions riot took place at New Lambton mine, Newcastle, yesterday. A number of laborers, who had been engaged to pat out coal, were rushed by a mob of some thousand miners armed with stioks. The police attempted to proteot the men, but were powerless against the numbers, and violence was only prevented by the surrender of the laborers, who undertook to refrain from doing any more work. A force of permanent artillery, under Colonel Spalding, with a Kordenfeldt gun, was despatched to the scene from Sydney, but the men had dispersed before its arrival. Colonel Roberts and 200 of permanent artillery, with Gatling and Nordenfeldt guns, left for Newcastle this evening. In consequence of the miners' riot at Lambton, Newcastle, His Exoellenoy the Governor has issued a proclamation calliug upon the citizens to assist in maintaining order and law in the coal districts. The proclamation warns the miners that stringent measures will be adopted by the Government for the protection of those engaged ia lawful work. Sydney, September 20. — Three of the mining ringleaders, named Sloan, Firth, and Evans, who took part in the riot at Lambton mine, have been arrested.
